History of CFTH

Incorporated in 1985, it would take another 6 years of dedication, hard work and fundraising by numerous volunteers for CFTH to officially broadcast over the airwaves on January 21st, 1991. An idea to pilot a community radio station serving villages from Chevery to La Tabatiere was originally sparked by Reverend Tim Milley and was further flamed by the involvement of many interested residents of the communities.

With the help of local fundraising activities and commitments from different levels of government, the dream to establish a main station in Harrington Harbour, a substation in La Tabatiere and a newsroom in Chevery, became a reality. CFTH began its programming with 6 villages in its broadcast area, Harrington, Chevery, Aylmer Sound, Téte a la Baleine, Mutton Bay and La Tabatiere. The hopes of also including Kegaska’s residents amongst its audience became a long awaited actuality in December of 2000.

Early on in its existence, CFTH came to the sad realization that their operations were too large for the population it served and eventually the huge financial burden of operational costs became unbearable. Although all operational costs were increasing, the amount of government subsidies remained at a standstill.

First came the decision to close the newsroom in Chevery followed by the closure of the substation in La Tabatiere. The Board of Directors and staff were distraught with both closures but knew that they were without a doubt crucial for CFTH’s survival. Nearly in financial ruins, there seemed no light at the end of the tunnel. It seemed imminent that the main station as well would have to close its *doors. The employees and Board of Directors became discouraged and the members of the radio were losing faith. Was this the end of our much anticipated dream? The employees decided that if we were going down, we would not do so without a fight!

For many years, through constant struggles and countless volunteer hours by the employees and its members, CFTH has not only recovered from its deficit, we have become more technically and financially sound than we have ever been. As for the light at the end of the tunnel that we never expected to see……..it’s become an eternal flame that we are both embracing and cherishing!

CFTH rents this building from Hydro Quebec for $1.00 annually!

Programming

Although there are many similarities between all stations on the Lower North Shore, what makes us all unique are our individualities one of which being our programming…….

“In June of 1992 a new window of opportunity opened for me, just 1 ½ years after the opening of the CFTH local radio station. A job as animator kept me at home in Harrington. Over the years I have seen many changes at the station; from managers, formats, programs, music, members and employees. Cfth had to eliminate the newsroom in Chevery and the substation in La Tabatiere but through it all we have continued to provide quality service. Now, since the installation of a full broadcast computer system, the chore of radio preparations is much easier and faster but is always interesting and exciting.”

Additional Thanks

It would be impossible to thank each person individually who has contributed to CFTH since its beginnings as just an idea in one man’s mind. So many people have played an important part in making our station as strong as it is today………

The employees and Board of Directors both past and present have all carved the radio’s personality into a unique station with its own flavour…..

The members who have remained faithful to CFTH through thick and thin and have supported the station incredibly financially, you are the heart of CFTH Radio……

The volunteers who have given so freely of their time without question and without hesitation, there are no words to express our sincere gratitude………

The people who have given us technical support voluntarily on countless occasions; Paul Rowsell, Kent Chown, Dominique Guay, Freeman Willcott, Alfred Jones, Dennis Tremblay & Pierre Voyer. Not only have you all helped make the station technically sound but you have saved the station thousands of dollars by giving your time so generously……….

The businesses along the coast who have supported us financially, by donating items for fundraisers and with in-kind services

Together we have kept CFTH alive since 1991, be proud of your local station…….you all deserve a huge round of applause!
