WELCOME TO THE LOWER NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY RADIO WEB SITEThe four Lower North Shore community radio stations include CFBS in Blanc Sablon, CJAS in St. Augustine River, CJTB in Tête-à-la-Baleine , and CFTH in Harrington Harbour. These radio stations provide a mix of local and international news, music, announcements, bingo, and the always important weather reports. LOWER NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY RADIO. THE VOICE OF OUR COMMUNITIESOur community radio stations are non-profit organizations, which serve as the voice of our local communities. The radio stations also play an important role as an emergency broadcasting system in a time of crisis. In both cases, we serve as the main relay point for information required by the local population. The community radio stations are funded by government grants, the sale of advertisement, and other financing activities such as bingo. Due to the size of our local markets, the annual budgets are very limited, and the community radio stations must also rely heavily on the efforts of local volunteers. Even with these challenges, we are still able to provide a diverse programming schedule for the entire year. By using broadcast technology to distribute information, the radio stations have become an integral part of the Lower North Shore. We are able to evolve with new technologies, such as the Internet, and integrate these technologies to fulfill their community mission.
WHAT IS COMMUNITY RADIO?Community radio stations respond to a need of the that neither the private sector nor the Government can satisfy. The stations are funded and staffed by local residents, and they also have editorial independence and local management autonomy. The community radio stations also distinguish themselves by their social mission and their values, as well as the participation of citizens in its management and its production of programs. Because of this, they can quickly adapt to local needs which are not being met by other media.
LOCAL AND REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTCommunity radio stations operate in both a local and regional environment. They are media directly linked with their community, and contribute to the economic, social, cultural and community development. As a consequence, the community radio stations are influenced by the characteristics of their local environment: its dynamism, its level of development, social cohesion, etc.
OTHER IMPORTANT CHALLENGESBecause community radio is part of the culture and communications world, it also faces major challenges concerning financing, competition for publicity, staff, and the quality and exclusivity of broadcast material. Our radio stations have also undertaken important challenges over the years to counter the negative effects of the demographic and economic challenges of our region.
